The Liberal Parks and Department anounced earlier this week that a coeducational softball league would be starting in July.

"This is one of our most popular adult sports activities," said Parks and Recreation sports director Donna Nelson-Atkins. "We anticipate a good turnout for this."

Nelson-Atkins said the teams will be registering up through July 6 and added that the leagues will be starting play in July.

"Games will be played on Monday and Tuesday and we are planning an 11 game season," said Nelson-Atkins. "We really do anticipate there will be some good softball to come out of this. In the past it definitely has been. I see no reason that this will be an exception."

The co-ed teams will be formed into both recreational and competitive leagues depending on the skill levels of the teams involved.

Nelson-Atkins said the Parks and Recreations Department finds the levels of enjoyment is increased when "blow-outs" are avoided. She said that at times uneven competitions can create some resentment. That is the reason for the two leagues.

"It will still happen on occasion," Nelson-Atkins said. "That's just the nature of sports, isn't it? But by creating both recreational and competitive leagues that will hopefully lessen the intensity of it. At least that's what we hope."

According to the Parks and Recreation Department representative, team entry fees will be $150 per team and a $175 late fee will be imposed for those teams who register late.

"It just makes so much easier on everyone if we can organize everything early and don't have to go back and reorganize everything."

Nelson-Atkins said scorekeepers and umpires will be provided at the games.
