Four men face multiple charges after allegedly carjacking a vehicle belonging to a handicapped man on Jan. 10 in Liberal.
Matthew Perez, 27, and Juan D. Garza, 26, both of Garden City, and Bobby Stensland, 19, and Jose Gil, 24, both of Dodge City, each face multiple felony charges including aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery after allegedly stealing a handicapped man’s vehicle and leaving the victim stranded in a field.
Perez and Garza each have a bond set at $500,000. Gil and Stensland each have a bond set at $50,000.
On Jan. 10 Hector Mata reported he had been a victim of robbery. According to court documents, two males wearing bandanas allegedly approached the victim’s vehicle outside of Tacos El Pastorcito on the 400 block of South Kansas Avenue. One of the men allegedly placed a gun on the victim’s shoulder and demanded that he get out of his car.
One man then climbed into the front passenger seat of the vehicle and allegedly forced the victim to drive his car to East Oak Street, while the other suspect followed in a black Surburban, according to the documents.
Once at East Oak Street, the men allegedly pulled Mata out of his car and then drove off with the victim's vehicle and wheelchair, the court documents also said. Mata was left stranded in the field.
Both Garden City Police Department and Finney County Sheriff's Office assisted Liberal Police Department in finding and arresting the suspects from the incident. GCPD arrested Gil at midnight Jan. 30 from a residence at 4101 E. Highway 50 lot 97 in Garden City.
"On the 29th of January, we were notified by the Liberal Police Department that they had a warrant on Gil," Garden City police Sgt. Michael Reagle said.
According to the court documents, Gil drove Garza, Perez and Stensland to Liberal from Garden City for the carjacking. Reagle said Gil tried to leave the residence when officers went to arrest him.
"He attempted to flee out of the residence, but we apprehended him," Reagle said.
Reagle also said Finney County Sheriff's Office later arrested Garza and Perez for warrants related to the carjacking. Reagle said GCPD works with other police departments to help them in arresting individuals with outstanding warrants.
Aggravated kidnapping is a severity level one person felony and aggravated robbery is a severity level three person felony. The men are also facing felony charges for conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and theft. Perez, Garza and Stensland's next court appearance is scheduled for March 29. Gil's next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
