A community leader, honored last week by the Chamber of Commerce, died Friday because of complications related to the H1N1 flu virus.

Larry Howell, 52, was the Liberal Chamber of Commerce president. Complications with H1N1 caused Howell to miss the chamber's annual "2010 Men and Women of Distinction Community Calendar" on Monday, Dec. 16.

"We are honoring him tonight even though he doesn't know it," said Rozelle Webb, the chamber's executive director at the event.

Howell attended the Seward County Community College in 1977 before graduating from Fort Hays State University with a degree in marketing in 1979. Before passing, Howell was the marketing director for Epic Touch.

In addition to his role with the chamber, Howell served on several other boards including the Liberal High School Site Council, the Good Samaritan Advisory Board, Mid American Air Museum Foundation Board and a Precinct Committeeman for the Seward County Republicans. He was a former Advertising Manager for The Southwest Daily Times.

He is survived by his father, Everett Howell, his two sons, Andrew Howell and Tyler Brown, his two daughters, Danielle Howell and Teryn Draper, his brother, Danny Howell, his sister, Debbie Wise, and two grandchildren.

His funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Greeley County Cemetery in Tribune, Kan. For more information, please see our obituary page.
